Alien8 Records is a music record label in Montreal that primarily represents noise and experimental music. In recent years, Alien8 have expanded their representation to include other local artists from genres such as pop, electronic, rock, folk, and many others.
The design brief consisted of rebranding the label in order to modernize their identity and appeal to a new generation of listeners. Deliverables include a logo, a brand guideline, and applications.
The chosen logo approach understands music as its own language, as it is interpreted and received differently than any spoken language on Earth; because there is greater meaning within sound and composition, music can reverberate farther in our minds and hearts. Moving forward with the idea that music is a language of its own and taking the name of the record label into play, a concept was developed of an alien entity with it's own extraterrestrial language.
I began this project with conceptualization: this involved a word map which informed several moodboards (figures 1.1 to 1.4) and a competitor analysis. After that it was time to ideate: in two week's time I sketched out some ideas (figure 1.5 - to 1.7) which were then refined to three different logo options (figure 1.9 to 1.11). These were presented in front of peers for feedback and final selection.

At first glance the logotype gives off an air of something “alien” with the letterform. Said letters were developed by experimenting on the typeface Futura; the final result showcases the logotype being constructed by bars and strokes with the number eight being the most obvious element of the composition. The final logotype remains clean, sharp, and modern.

We want to take it beyond.
The color palette for the brand always remains monochromatic. Regardless of the application, the logo must appear in either black or white. For exceptional cases, the logo may be to a tone of gray.
This project imagined a multitude of applications for the rebrand, including stationery, promotional material, and web design.
